AI Overviews is Google's existing index, synthesized
Unlike ChatGPT (which uses Bing) or Perplexity (which has its own index), Google AI Overviews draws directly from Google's main index. The candidate set for an AI Overview citation is roughly the top 10 organic results for the query. If you don't rank, you can't be cited.
What gets pulled into the Overview
Structured content gets pulled disproportionately:
- FAQ blocks with FAQPage schema (high pull rate)
- Tables with clear headers (price tables, comparison tables)
- Short numbered or bulleted lists with parallel structure
- Definitions in <p> tags following an H2 that matches the question
- Step-by-step instructions (numbered lists with HowTo schema)
The shortcut for existing top-10 pages
If you already rank in positions 4-10 for a target query and aren't getting cited in AI Overviews, add: (1) an FAQ block with 5+ Q&A pairs answering related questions, (2) a comparison table, (3) a 1-3 sentence quick-answer paragraph below the H1. Re-publish with updated dateModified. Most pages start getting cited within 30 days.
